Hola and hello,
My name is Joshua Lee. I am 26 years old from Southern California. Ever since I can remember, people have always asked me, why it is, that I look so different from parents and my 5 siblings. My friends and family constantly joke about my “misplacement”, and give me all their “hilarious” explanations for why I share so little resemblance to my blood relatives.
Above all, the most common mistake that people make every day, is that of my ethnicity. Even close friends, until told otherwise, honestly believe that I am of Hispanic descent (“Mexican”). Although I am uncontrollably drawn to the food and have a great love for the culture, I am not at all Mexican. According to my parents, I am half Chinese (“Asian”) and half Caucasian (“White”).
I’ve seen baby pictures. I’ve seen blood tests. I’ve seen the birth certificate. I’ve even seen my parent’s baby pictures. I’ve seen it all. And still no trace of mexican. And yet, I honestly don’t go a single day without someone assuming that I’m Mexican. I’m starting to lose my confidence.
So now, I say it’s time we solve this lifelong question once and for all...
Am I really Mexican? I can’t be. Can I?
Sincerely,
The Mexican’t (Joshua Lee)
